The Career Programmer: Guerilla Tactics for an Imperfect World

Apress; 2nd edition | January 26, 2006
ISBN-10: 1590596242 | 296 pages
PDF | 50.8 Mb

Missed deadlines, death marches, unstable releases, continual overtime, and skyrocketing stress levels are legendary in the software development industry. Unlike traditional occupations such as accounting or administration, the software business is populated by programmers who are as creative and passionate about their work as musicians or artists.

For most, it is a complete surprise when they enter the business world and find that internal politics, inept management, and unrealistic marketing drive the process, rather than a structured and orderly approach based on technical issues and quality. The average programmer, having the least authority in the management chain of command, feels powerless to change these things, but suffers the consequences.

"The Career Programmer" steps through the entire sequence of events, from the decision to create a new software system to the end of the project, and explains how the individual programmer or project manager can work within the existing system to solve specific problems and regain control of the process.

Avoiding an academic approach, care is taken to offer proven, practical, hands-on solutions that are designed to work when confronted with the political and chaotic realities of the business environment. Issues are addressed from both the programmer and project manager point of view, and steps are shown from all perspectives, from large-scale teams down to single developer projects.

Management will never simply hand over the reins and allow a completely new and unfamiliar approach to be instituted. Realizing this, the reader is shown how to build on small, incremental successes that not only solve the problems at hand, but also work towards a gradual reworking of the development process by showing management a stream of results to which they can relate. For the individual programmer or project manager, the end result is less overtime, less stress, better quality software, and a more satisfying career.

Comparative Archaeologies: A Sociological View of the Science of the Past

Ludomir R. Lozny,
Publisher: Springer, ISBN: 1441982248
edition 2011, 867 pages
PDF | 14.6 mb

Archaeology, as with all of the social sciences, has always been characterized by competing theoretical propositions based on diverse bodies of locally acquired data. In order to fulfill local, regional expectations, different goals have been assigned to the practitioners of Archaeology in different regions.

These goals might be entrenched in local politics, or social expectations behind cultural heritage research.

This comprehensive book explores regional archaeologies from a sociological perspective—to identify and explain regional differences in archaeological practice, as well as their existing similarities.

This work covers not only the currently-dominant Anglo-American archaeological paradigm, but also Latin America, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa, all of which have developed their own unique archaeological traditions.

The contributions in this work cover these "alternative archaeologies," in the context of their own geographical, political, and socio-economic settings, as well as the context of the currently accepted mainstream approaches.

Current radiation protection standards are based upon the application of the linear no-threshold (LNT) assumption, which considers that even very low doses of ionizing radiation can cause cancer. The radiation hormesis hypothesis, by contrast, proposes that low-dose ionizing radiation is beneficial.

In this book, the author examines all facets of radiation hormesis in detail, including the history of the concept and mechanisms, and presents comprehensive, up-to-date reviews for major cancer types.

It is explained how low-dose radiation can in fact decrease all-cause and all-cancer mortality and help to control metastatic cancer. Attention is also drawn to biases in epidemiological research when using the LNT assumption.

The author shows how proponents of the LNT assumption consistently reject, manipulate, and deliberately ignore an overwhelming abundance of published data and falsely claim that no reliable data are available at doses of less than 100 mSv.

The Bonds of Debt

Richard Dienst, "The Bonds of Debt"
Publisher: Verso | ISBN 10: 1844676919
2011 | PDF | 200 pages | 8.4 MB

The credit crisis has pushed the whole world so far into the red that the gigantic sums involved defy understanding. On a human level, what does such an enormous degree of debt and insolvency mean? In this timely book, cultural critic Richard Dienst considers the financial crisis, global poverty, media politics and radical theory to parse the various implications of a world where man is born free but everywhere is in debt.

Written with humor and verve, Bonds of Debt ranges across subjects—such as Obama’s national security strategy, the architecture of Prada stores, press photos of Bono, and a fairy tale told by Karl Marx—to capture a modern condition founded on fiscal imprudence.

Moving beyond the dominant pieties and widespread anxieties surrounding the topic, Dienst re-conceives the world’s massive financial obligations as a social, economic, and political bond, where the crushing weight of objectified wealth comes face to face with new demands for equality and solidarity. For this inspired analysis, we are indebted to him.
