Teaching English to the World: History, Curriculum, and Practice

By George Braine
Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum
Pages: 216, Date: 2005-04
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0805854002, pdf 10.5 mb

Description:
Teaching English to the World: History, Curriculum, and Practice is a unique collection of English language teaching (ELT) histories, curricula, and personal narratives from non-native speaker (NNS) English teachers around the world. No other book brings such a range of international ELT professionals together to describe and narrate what they know best.
The book includes chapters from Brazil, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. All chapters follow a consistent pattern, describing first the history of English language teaching in a particular country, then the current ELT curriculum, followed by the biography or the autobiography of an English teacher of that country. This consistency in the structuring of chapters will enable readers to assimilate the information easily while also comparing and contrasting the context of ELT in each country.

The chapter authors--all born in or residents of the countries they represent and speakers of the local language or languages as well as English--provide insider perspectives on the challenges faced by local English language teachers. There is clear evidence that the majority of English teachers worldwide are nonnative speakers (NNS), and there is no doubt that many among them have been taught by indigenous teachers who themselves are nonnative speakers.

This book brings the professional knowledge and experience of these teachers and the countries they represent to a mainstream Western audience including faculty, professionals, and graduate students in the field of ESL; to the international TESOL community; and to ELT teachers around the world.

Subspace Methods for System Identification

By Tohru Katayama
Publisher: Springer
Pages: 392, Date: 2005-10-20
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1852339810

Description:
System identification provides methods for the sensible approximation of real systems using a model set based on experimental input and output data. Tohru Katayama sets out an in-depth introduction to subspace methods for system identification in discrete-time linear systems thoroughly augmented with advanced and novel results.

The text is structured into three parts. First, the mathematical preliminaries are dealt with: numerical linear algebra; system theory; stochastic processes; and Kalman filtering. The second part explains realization theory, particularly that based on the decomposition of Hankel matrices, as it is applied to subspace identification methods.

Two stochastic realization results are included, one based on spectral factorization and Riccati equations, the other on canonical correlation analysis (CCA) for stationary processes.

Part III uses the development of stochastic realization results, in the presence of exogenous inputs, to demonstrate the closed-loop application of subspace identification methods CCA and ORT (based on orthogonal decomposition).

The addition of tutorial problems with solutions and Matlab® programs which demonstrate various aspects of the methods propounded to introductory and research material makes Subspace Methods for System Identification not only an excellent reference for researchers but also a very useful text for tutors and graduate students involved with courses in control and signal processing.

The book can be used for self-study and will be of much interest to the applied scientist or engineer wishing to use advanced methods in modeling and identification of complex systems..

Shape interrogation is the process of extraction of information from a geometric model. It is a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. The authors focus on shape interrogation of geometric models bounded by free-form surfaces. Free-form surfaces, also called sculptured surfaces, are widely used in the bodies of ships, automobiles and aircraft, which have both functionality and attractive shape requirements. Many electronic devices as well as consumer products are designed with aesthetic shapes, which involve free-form surfaces. This book provides the mathematical fundamentals as well as algorithms for various shape interrogation methods.

A Theory of Justice: Revised Edition (Belknap)

By John Rawls
Publisher: Belknap Press,
Pages: 560, Date: 1999-09-30
ISBN-10 : 0674000773, DJVU 16.6 mb

Description:
Since it appeared in 1971, John Rawls's A Theory of Justice has become a classic. The author has now revised the original edition to clear up a number of difficulties he and others have found in the original book.

Rawls aims to express an essential part of the common core of the democratic tradition--justice as fairness--and to provide an alternative to utilitarianism, which had dominated the Anglo-Saxon tradition of political thought since the nineteenth century.

Rawls substitutes the ideal of the social contract as a more satisfactory account of the basic rights and liberties of citizens as free and equal persons. "Each person," writes Rawls, "possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override." Advancing the ideas of Rousseau, Kant, Emerson, and Lincoln, Rawls's theory is as powerful today as it was when first published.

Statistical Methods in Education and Psychology (3rd Edition)

By Gene V. Glass, Kenneth D. Hopkins
Publisher: Allyn & Bacon
Pages: 608, Date: 1995-08-20
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0205142125

From the uploader:
I find this to be a wonderful book for social sciences students who need to have a first look at statistical theory for quantitative experiments. In my opinion, this book well balances the rigor needed (i.e., its not a statistical cookbook, you are given at least an intuitive understanding at all times), but does not 'bother' the reader with advanced math (i.e., Laws of Large Numbers, Central Limit Theorem etc. are taken as facts and explained intuitively).

The book starts with the easy stuff, but gets quite deep, e.g., Multi-Factor ANOVA Designs (one of the few books I know of to cover mixed ANOVA design) or ANCOVA. While not completely new (last revision in 1996), I believe that most of the content is still usable for most of the experiments (under)grad students could ever dream of doing :)
